Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough, Roll of Honour. Methodist Archive and Research Centre (reference MA 8030 item 184)
Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes, 2018

Woodlands Road Wesleyan, Middlesbrough is now the Mercuria Building of Teesside University. Six men from the church fell in the Great War.

Arthur Cook

William P. Edwards

Walter Gatenby

Thomas H. Harbron

Richard Kneeshaw

Herbert Lethbridge

The Guild Secretary did not have any further information.

The men were also commemorated on a plaque inside the church, as Ian Stubbs’ comment tells us, and two of them (W. Gatenby and T.H. Harbron) on their family gravestones.

They are all buried in France, and the relatives of W.P. Edwards, R. Kneeshaw and H. Lethbridge chose epitaphs which expressed their faith.

  • Thank you Ian for picking up on this typographic error, and for telling us about the other memorials to these six people. I will amend this page.
We would be delighted to receive copies of your images of Woodlands Road for a new page about the chapel. If you felt that you might like to write the page for us we would also be very happy. The page would be on our other site, My Wesleyan Methodists, so you would need to use the link “Add your story” on the My Wesleyan Methodists home page.

  • This should read Woodlands Road not Winlands and the memorial is now in Grove Hill Methodist Church in Middlesbrough. Images of the building and one of the memorial are in my album on flickr and I would be only too happy to supply them freely to you for use on this site. This is the link to the album https://www.flickr.com/photos/bolckow/albums/72157627339712697
