Roll of honour

By Philip Thornborow

North Road were very thorough in their remembrance: they commissioned a stained glass window, with accompanying plaque and book, and also a booklet which gives full details of the 23 members who died, the 132 who served and returned, and even the two ladies who served in the VAD. This full record is unusual, but inevitably there are some discrepancies due to the different times when the names were recorded.

The list provided in 1929 contains all the dead. As it is typed and legible the only note to make is that the tenth name is Pte. Geldard, Percy 285630 of the 3rd Canadian Infantry.

The booklet giving full details of all who died and served may be found at

The roll held within the church, which accompanied the stained glass window was presumably written before the war ended, as Bladen, Butler, Chapman, Dover, Heseldine, Liddle, Mason. Rickaby. Shinkfield, Smith and Whittle are not noted as casualties, and Ascough, Bewll, Geldard, and Marley are not listed at all. It may be found at
