For two years 1952/53 I had the pleasure and privilege of winding the church clock. A weekly wind was required and I received the princely sum of £5 per annum. It was not much of a chore because I enjoyed climbing the stairs to the clock face and then hearing the wheels and cogs kick into action just prior to striking on the hour. Penny coins were used as weights to regulate the timing and more or less were needed according to the outside temperature.
