MAYC London Rally

Central Hall, Bromley

I first became interested in the MAYC when my daughter Frances was a member, and later a leader. We had a lovely weekend when we had 3 boys to stay on the Saturday night, 1 in a bed and 2 in sleeping bags on the floor.

The MAYC London Weekend in 1973 coincided with young people rioting in Russell Square, throwing bricks at the police and injuring their horses. This was reported on the news by the BBC but no mention was made of all the youngsters gathered for the MAYC Weekend.

I was so cross that I wrote to the BBC and asked why all the bad young people were getting such a wide coverage when our MAYC Rally in London, at the same time, was having a peaceful, happy rally on the Saturday, and the church service and march from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square on the Sunday. I had a very nice reply that said that they had to cover the riots as that was the news but they would give the Rally some coverage the next year.

You can tell how pleased I was the following year to find that the Sunday Morning Service was coming from the Royal Albert Hall. They gave a very good coverage explaining what it was and showing the different groups taking their places, waving their flags and holding up their banners and then the service.
