Placement at Balliol

Starting out

I spent a few weeks on placement at Balliol in 2001, when I was training in Durham as a student minister in the Methodist Church. It was great to be welcomed into a place that was so busy and yet so welcoming. I worked with Rev Joan Thornton and learned so much in my time with her. I remember so much about being around the Balliol centre and also Longbenton Methodist Church. There was a food co-op operating each week in the centre and it was well used by local residents. There was a variety of activities for a thriving youth club and the place and its workers were much appreciated by families on the local estate. I remember coffee mornings and fund raising activities and particularly time spent with the women of the Young at Heart group. This included an unforgettable day trip to Darlington for the market there. There was so much fun on the bus and they were such a great group to be amongst. during my time on placement I learned a lot about the history of the Balliol centre and of Longbenton itself. I will always appreciate that special time in my training.
