War Memorial WW1 and WW2

As with the Boundary Road memorial also located in Hatfield Road church, I have done some very basic research on those named. If anyone has further details they would like added or can correct any mistake I may have made please add a comment to this page and I will ensure it is updated.

A few of the names seem to be incorrect either on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission records or perhaps less likely the war memorial itself.

First World War Dead

Charles F Badham
A Private in the Hertfordshire Regiment – Died 28/05/1916 – aged 22. Also commemorated in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery, Somme, France

Fred Bruty
Possibly Frederick James Bruty. A Private in the Bedfordshire Regiment – Died 23/10/1918. Also commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate).

Sidney Catton
A Private in the 1st (City of London) Battalion (Royal Fusiliers), London Regiment – Died 03/05/1917 aged 22. Enlisted Handel Street, resident St, Albans. Son of John Elliott Catton and Mary Elizabeth Catton, of Brampton Rd., St. Albans. Buried in the London Cemetery, Neuville-Vitasse, Pas de Calais, France

Herbert Corley
Probably Bert Corley who was a Private in the Middlesex Regiment – Died 23/10/1916 aged 24. Also remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

Frank Dibsdale
A Trumpeter in the Royal Field Artillery – Died 23/11/1918. Also remembered in the Beirut war cemetery.

Harry Driscoll
A Private in the Hertfordshire Regiment – Died 21/03/1918 aged 19. Enlisted Hertford, resident St Albans. Son of Alfred William and Edith Driscoll, of “Wintershaw”, Brampton Rd., St. Albans, Herts. No known grave. Also remembered on the Arras Memorial.

Louis Kemp
A Sapper in the Royal Engineers – Died 12/12/1918 aged 33. Also remembered in the Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille.

Frank Markwell
A Corporal in the Hertfordshire Regiment. Died 08/12/1916. Buried in St Albans (Hatfield Road) Cemetery (E. H. 19)

Fred Traham
Likely to be Frederick William Trahar. A Lance Corporal in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) – Died 13/04/1915 aged 28. Son of F. W. and Lilian Trahar, of 7, Alexandra Rd., St. Albans. Also remembered in the Rue-Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix.

George Wright
Possibly a Private in the Hertfordshire Regiment. Died 21/05/1915 aged 22. Remembered also in the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.

Second World War Dead

Jack Bowles
A Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. Died 15/06/1944 aged 24. Also remembered in Sheffield (Shire Green Cemetery).

Kenneth Grist
(Sidney George Kenneth Grist) – A Lance Bombardier in the Royal Artillery. Died 23/03/1940 aged 21. Also remembered in Forquieres churchyard extension.

Leslie Whitney
Probably Leslie Witney – A Sapper in the Royal Engineers. Died 10/03/1941 aged 23. Son of Alfred H. Witney and Katherine Witney, of St. Albans.  Remembered in St Albans (Hatfield Road) Cemetery.
